New Jersey has so many hikes, it's hard to single one out as being the most beautiful. However, this "Stairway to Heaven" hike lives up to its name. A moderate hike along the Appalachian Trail, you'll start at the Pochuck Boardwalk and end at Pinwheel Vista.
Pochuck Boardwalk
You'll begin your hike at the start of the Pochuck Boardwalk in Glenwood. There is a small pull off near the "hiking" sign, along with street parking nearby. Be sure to observe posted signs and be respectful of the residential neighborhood.
Bridges
You'll cross several scenic bridges on your journey including the famous Pochuck Suspension Bridge.
Scenery
After you've hiked across the 1-mile boardwalk and bridges, you'll find fields of flowers, farms, sprawling pastures, train tracks and stunning views of Waywayanda Mountain in the distance.
First Viewpoint
3.1 miles into your hike, you'll come across Annie's Bluff. You'll find some fantastic views here, if you look for them. The bluff is easy enough to miss.
Pinwheel Vista
When you spot a massive pile of rocks, look for the blue trail to Pinwheel Vista. When you arrive at your destination, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. Sit here for a while and relax before heading back the way you came. Keep your eyes peeled for High Point Monument on a clear day.
The entire journey spans 7.3 miles and ranges from easy (boardwalk sections) to more difficult (hiking the rocky stairway up Waywayanda mountain). For a map of the trail, click here. For detailed directions and modifications to this hike, visit www.njhiking.com. See their video walk-through below.
