1. Black River Trail Loop in Chester, NJ.
The Black River Trail Loop is located in Black River County Park in Chester, NJ. This loop trail is 6.4 miles long and is considered moderately challenging. At the beginning of the trail, you'll get to see an incredible historic gristmill in the park. The trail itself covers a variety of terrains and will bring you past a waterfall and even some ruins.
2. Chikahoki Falls via Highlands, Post Brook, and Carris Hill Trail in Bloomingdale, NJ.
The Chikahoki Falls via Highlands, Post Brook, and Carris Hill Trail is located in the Norvin Green State Forest. This is a challenging loop hike that is 4.1 miles long and includes a lot of uphill and rocky terrain. You'll see some stunning views, a beautiful waterfall, and endless forest scenery.
3. Stairway To Heaven Trail in Vernon Township, NJ.
The Stairway To Heaven Trail is located inside of the Wawayanda State Park. This hike is a 2.6 mile out-and-back hike that is considered a moderately challenging trip. You'll take a steep climb to the top of Wawayanda Mountain and be able to take in a stunning view of the Vernon Valley from the top. On the way back down, you'll be able to see a beautiful waterfall and cascades. Be careful on the rocks!
4. Mount Tammany: Red Dot and Blue Dot Loop Trail in Pahaquarry, NJ.
Mount Tammany: Red Dot and Blue Dot Loop Trail is located in the Worthington State Forest. This 3.6-mile loop trail is considered a challenging route. This hike will take you up Mount Tammany, and includes some steep rocky climbs. You'll be surrounded by amazing views your whole way up the Red Dot Trail to the summit. You'll head back down the mountain on the Blue Dot Trail and you'll pass a swimming hole, some small waterfalls, and Dunnfield Creek.
5. MacEvoy, Castle, and Cannonball Trail Loop in Oakland, NJ.
The MacEvoy, Castle, and Cannonball Trail Loop is located in the Ramapo Mountain State Forest. This loop trail is considered a moderately challenging route and it is 5.5 miles long. You'll start the hike heading uphill to Ramapo Lake. From the lake, you'll head to the Castle Trail which will lead you to some very interesting ruins and amazing views. As you head back down, you'll pass over a stream and head to another amazing overlook.
