New Jersey's state parks are a lot of fun. I love heading off the beaten path and seeing what I can find, such as unique statues. But I've never discovered something nearly as eerie as what can be found in the little-known Six Mile Run Park in Somerset. This suburban park has a lot of winding paths, making it popular with hikers - and one hidden trail leads to a truly unexpected sight. It's not often you find an abandoned farmhouse in New Jersey, but there it is - maybe just feet away from where many hikers explore. During the day, it's a unique sight and a great photo opportunity. At night, though, it feels completely different. As you walk the creepy, long-abandoned grounds, it's easy to feel like you've stepped into a ghost story. Do you dare to see what lies in the woods?
Six Mile Run State Park is one of New Jersey's best hidden gems, a popular spot for hiking and sightseeing in Franklin Township.
The terrain in this park is usually moderately challenging, but the biggest challenge this park poses comes from its vast network of trails. Inexperienced hikers can easily get lost - and a hidden secret waits for the experienced.
The park's biggest secret can only be accessed if you take the Amsterdam Drive entrance, take the Red Trail, and search for a hidden trail along the way...
You'll know you're there when you start to see signs of odd disrepair around the area.
You'll be startled by a massive farmhouse and several other agricultural buildings, left to the elements for decades.
Unlike many abandoned buildings, these are open to the public although unsupervised. You're not violating any laws, but the buildings may be in disrepair. Many have been graffiti'd heavily.
For those who have been here when the sun goes down, they report the experience being deeply eerie - which no doubt has made many of them come back to document it further.
