Memorial Day is finally here; the unofficial start of summer. Though the weather isn't perfect, the beach is still calling me. Which beach is the question; Asbury Park is the answer. New Jersey has so many incredible shore towns but Asbury Park has garnered global recognition. It first gained fame across the country in 1973 when the iconic Bruce Springsteen released his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park. Since then, the town has seen its ups and downs but is currently back on track to be one of the best beach towns in the world.
The beach town made waves last year when it was voted a top international travel destination by Travel & Leisure Magazine.
Coming in at #10, we beat out bigger cities including Seattle, Sicily, Denver and Rio De Janeiro. Other accolades include being chosen as one of the best beach towns in America by Thrillist and one of the top ten places to listen to music in the country, according to USA Today.
The music scene truly is epic.
Countless artists have gotten their start in the city and there's no shortage of live music. The Stone Pony is legendary; don't miss Summer Stage events like the Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival (June 9th-11th). Wonder Bar is equally as impressive and even hosts seasonal "Yappy Hours" on the outdoor patio for dog lovers. Both are great places to go.
The boardwalk is eclectic and all-around amazing.
This quirky boardwalk is a fun mix of vintage and modern. There are so many great attractions, shops and restaurants to check out. The Silverball Arcade Museum is a great way to spend the day, and you can dine at McLoone's Asbury Grille, Langosta Lounge, The Anchor’s Bend, Watermark, Stella Marina, or Pop’s Garage when you’re done. If you’re in the mood to shop, the options are endless – consider Carla Gizzi, Asbury Galleria, Shelter Home, Style Rocket, Criterion Chocolates or Greetings from Geralyn.
Off the boardwalk, your options are just as unique.
A favorite, you'll find Paranormal Books & Curiosities on Cookman Avenue. Renovations will be complete in just over two weeks and they offer a fantastic selection of paranormal books. You'll also find a small collection of artifacts in their paranormal museum and several local ghost tours based out of the shop. Other downtown delights include art galleries, The ShowRoom Cinema, Purple Glaze Donuts and Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten with its wonderful rooftop patio. Visit the Biergarten on June 11th for Sunday Funday with live music, games, raffles and more.
They've got the best new hotel in New Jersey.
The Asbury has also garnered praise as one of the best new hotels in America. Even if you don't book a room, it's a fantastic place to spend a day or night. Enjoy rooftop movies and a beer garden. There are also a few other overnight options in town. The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel is a classic, Empress Hotel is loaded with amenities, and the Asbury Park Inn will make you feel like you're right at home.
Of course, the beach isn't too shabby.
And by not "too shabby," I mean fantastic. I've always enjoyed calm waves and warm tide pools, though everyone has a different experience. Still, the shore is often packed with swimmers and sunbathers - so this beach is definitely doing something right. Plus, it's centrally located with easy access to North and South Jersey.
The area has been through some tough times, but it’s been revitalized and only continues to rise in popularity. With so much to do and see, the city is an ideal summer destination. Whether you enjoy relaxing at the beach, taking in a concert, or enjoying diverse cuisines, Asbury Park offers something for you. To learn more about the brand new Asbury hotel, click here.
