New Jersey has hundreds of beautiful hiking trails all across the state but few (if any) are quite like this. You can take beach hiking to the next level when you visit Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. This trail is short, sweet, scenic, and sandy!
If you're a long walks on the beach type of person, you'll love Barnegat Lighthouse State Park.
You won't just be walking from your car to the shore here. The park is home to a 1/5-mile maritime forest trail.
The forest is a popular resting and feeding area for migrating birds. Black Cherry, Sassafras, Eastern Red Cedar, and American Holly abound in the area.
The trail offers beach and lighthouse views along with informative signs covering local plant life.
After you've completed the maritime trail, there are several areas for you to explore.
You can walk along the sand to the shore (making sure to keep off the dunes and observe posted signs) or you can stroll along the paved boardwalk. Fishing and picnicking are also available.
Other options including climbing to the top of the lighthouse or visiting the newly renovated interpretive center. Visitors will learn about the history of the lighthouse and Barnegat Bay along with the ecology in and wildlife of the area. Both are open during select hours.
This park is a favorite among photographers and it has other perks for hikers including restrooms and adjacent restaurants. Kelly's Old Barney Restaurant is closest and they are open for takeout. There's also a nearby gift and tackle shop. While the park is open for passive recreation, some amenities, shops, and attractions may be closed. Check out the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection website or call the park office at 609-494-2016 for more details. Be sure to call any restaurant you are interested in visiting as some require reservations.
