While winter has given New Hampshire one (hopefully) last blast of snow, the sights of spring will be appearing soon. Trees will be leafing out again, and best of all, wildflowers will be popping up from the ground. Seeing the color return to the world is one of my favorite parts of the spring season. If you also need a dose of spring color, check out Wildflower Trail at Beaver Brook Association in Hollis for a display of some of the prettiest wildflowers in New Hampshire.
The Beaver Brook Association trails in Hollis add up to lots and lots of miles. Fortunately, you only need to walk one short path, Wildflower Trail, to see some great spring color.
You won't need any fancy hiking gear for this trek, just a pair of comfortable shoes.
Along this fully-accessible trail you'll find specimens of spring wildflowers native to New Hampshire, such as Bloodroot.
Bluets are a very common wildflower found across the state. These tiny flowers produce nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies.
Trout Lily is something I see a lot of while hiking through the state's forests. They bloom before nearby trees leaf out in order to take full advantage of the sunlight.
Spring Starflower are not only beautiful to look at, they will also keep deer and rabbits away from your yard, as they are resistant to nibbles from to local wildlife.
Hepatica are a member of the buttercup family that was once used as a medicinal herb - but beware, it can be toxic in large doses.
Marsh marigold is also related to the buttercup family, and as its name suggests, it thrives in marshes, fens, and wetlands.
If you are in search of an easy stroll to view the colors of spring wildflowers in New Hampshire, check out Wildflower Trail at Beaver Brook Association. For more information and to view a trail map, visit the Beaver Brook Association website.
Beaver Brook isn't the only place to catch the spectacle of wildflowers and flowering plants in spring and summer. Also, take a walk to see the mountain laurel at Florence M. Tarr Wildlife Sanctuary in Bedford.
