New Hampshire isn't exactly known for the pure white beaches you see in movies - you'll need to head to Florida or the Caribbean for that. But that doesn't mean we don't have our own gorgeous, sandy beaches. Jenness State Beach has, in our opinion, the best sand you'll find in New Hampshire - and it's also a lot easier to beat the crowds here.
Jenness State Beach is located in Rye, just 15 minutes north of the always overcrowded Hampton Beach.
The beach is popular in the summer, but compared to Hampton beach it's a total breeze to find a parking space and a spot to stretch out your beach blanket.
The beach is definitely overshadowed by its noisier, busier neighbor to the south, but we think that's a good thing - Jenness State Beach is serene and peaceful, a great place to take your family for a fun beach day that won't leave you all overwhelmed.
Its sand is soft and clean, especially by New England standards. You'll want to take off your sandals and enjoy squishing it between your toes. It's also perfect for building sandcastles or sculptures with your kids.
You might even spot some surfers enjoying the waves.
The beach has restrooms, showers, and lifeguards, but little else in the way of amenities, lending it an unspoiled feel. Bring an umbrella and a picnic and you'll be all set for a day by the shore.
Even on gray days or in the off-season, it's a perfect beach to take a nice contemplative walk.
As the sun goes down, you can watch the beautiful changing colors over the water. On your way home, stop by Lagos Ice Cream to cap a perfect day at the beach.
Is Jenness State Beach in your summer plans yet? We sure hope so. For details and lifeguard hours, check out the New Hampshire State Park's website.
