Summer in New Hampshire means it's time to seek out places to cool off from the heat. Fortunately, there is no shortage of ponds, lakes, and rivers that flow through the state. Many of these rivers also feature some of the most beautiful waterfalls in New England, which are perfect spots for beating the heat. Along the Ammonoosuc River lies one small cascade and pool that is one of the best NH swimming holes.
Lower Ammonoosuc Falls, also known as Ammonoosuc Lower Falls or Lower Falls, is tucked away along the Ammonoosuc River in the town of Carroll.
This area has long been a place of recreation and solitude for both visitors and locals, as depicted in a postcard view from the early 1900s.
From the parking area, an easy, flat walk of about a quarter-mile leads to the falls and pool. The walk should take about 10 minutes.
The Ammonoosuc River stretches 55 miles from its headwaters on the western slope of Mt. Washington to where it empties into the Connecticut River in Woodsville.
Lower Ammonoosuc Falls slides through a low gorge and slides 15 feet over ledges down into a large and inviting pool.
As with any waterfall, the flow is most impressive at times of high water. Use caution on the ledges when wet as they can be slippery.
To reach Lower Ammonoosuc Falls, take Old Cherry Mountain Rd. off US Route 302 in Carroll and then immediately turn west onto an access road to the parking at a gate.
One of my absolute favorite things to do is to hike alongside water features like ponds and brooks, and to visit waterfalls. Here are ten great waterfalls that are easy to get to and one hiking trail that has five separate waterfalls along the way.
