Autumn doesn't last long around these parts but it provides wonderfully cool temperatures and that bright foliage color that I wait for all year. It's that one time of the year when nature explodes with beauty before going to sleep for the winter so I like to make the most of it! A beautiful spot for New Hampshire foliage viewing is Dixville Notch State Park in northern New Hampshire and it's definitely worth the trip!
Dixville Notch State Park is a tiny state park in the township of Dixville. It lies along New Hampshire Route 26, the state's northernmost east-west highway.
Dixville Notch is a narrow mountain pass lined with steep, craggy walls that have a more gothic appearance than other mountainous terrain in New Hampshire.
While the park itself is small at only 127 acres, it packs a lot of natural beauty into its tiny space, especially when the autumn colors are at their peak.
Lake Gloriette is situated on the west side of Dixville Notch. Across the lake is the former Balsams Grand Resort Hotel at the foot of Abenaki Mountain, which closed in 2011. Planning continues for this historic hotel to reopen and expand.
Towering 600 feet above the southern wall of the notch is the high crag known as Table Rock. A very steep direct route and a longer but easier route allow hikers to reach the top.
Admittedly, Table Rock is not for those with a fear of heights or for pets. The ledge is about 10 feet wide and juts out from the wall of the notch for about 100 feet. It does, however, provide a spectacular perch for viewing the foliage color below.
On the eastern side of Dixville Notch are two waterfalls tucked into the woods. These are attractive spots to not only catch some great foliage color but to also enjoy beautiful water scenery.
No matter if you make the climb up to Table Rock or simply pull off the highway down below, Dixville Notch State Park is an enjoyable spot for some prime New Hampshire foliage viewing. For more information, visit New Hampshire State Parks.
In addition to making the trip up to Dixville Notch, here are eight other road trips you can take to check out the gorgeous fall color!
