I hike a lot for both work and play but there are times when I like to keep things simple and short. That might be because of a lack of time or energy. Still, getting out there in some way feeds my soul. While a lot of the higher peaks in the White Mountains get the glory, and deservedly so, there are definitely places where you can go if you want to get a short hike in. Pitcher Mountain in Stoddard, a gem of southern New Hampshire hiking, fits the bill perfectly with a short walk to amazing views.
The main access point for Pitcher Mountain is at the height of land on Rt. 123 in Stoddard. From here, the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway follows an access road for the fire tower on top.
About three-quarters of the way up the mountain, the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway passes this extraordinary outlook that is one of my favorite spots in southern New Hampshire.
The open summit of Pitcher makes it one of the best viewpoints in the state compared to its ease. It doesn't take much effort to be rewarded with views like this.
The bare top of Pitcher also makes it an ideal location for sunrise or sunset hikes. On this evening, myself and other visitors could see rainfall off to the west.
If you happen to visit when the summit fire tower is staffed, you may be invited inside the cab by the fire warden, as was the case on this day in 2022.
When descending, you can either head back down the way you came or use an alternate blue-blazed side path that loops back to the parking area.
Due to having plowed parking and gentle access to the summit, Pitcher is also perfect for beginner winter hikers. Be aware, however, that the winds could be whipping up top, so be sure to be equipped properly.
You can learn more about visiting Pitcher Mountain as well as other great southern New Hampshire hiking opportunities in the AMC Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide. Pitcher Mountain is also one of the sites of the state's 15 active fire lookouts.
Did you know that you can hike all of the 15 active fire lookouts and receive a patch for your accomplishment?
