Milan Hill State Park is a wonderful place for a vacation. This family-friendly park has a little bit of everything. It's located in north-central New Hampshire and it's open year-round. There are 102 acres of fun in this great park; visitors can enjoy biking, picnicking, camping, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, photography, wildlife viewing, and so much more.
Two of the best features of this park are its 1932 fire tower and its yurts. You can enjoy both of these things in one awesome day. Read on to learn more.
Before this state park was a park, it was a camp for Civilian Conservation Corps workers in the 1930s. Today, it's a popular destination for families and other adventurers. It's located about a mile off New Hampshire Route 16, just outside of the village of Milan in the heart of the White Mountains.
One of the biggest draws in this park is the 1932 fire tower. At one point in time, New Hampshire had 91 active fire towers; today there are only 15 left - and this is one of them.
The Granite State has about 250 wildfires per year that burn about 250 acres per year. Most of the year, no one lives in the tower. However, the New Hampshire Division of Forest and Lands uses the tower during the summer months - prime fire season - to keep an eye out for fires before they get out of control. Part-time forest aides also teach visitors about fire prevention while stationed there.
The Milan Hill Fire Tower is 54 feet tall. You can climb the stairs to the top during your visit.
The hike to the fire tower is easy; even small children can do it. It's only a one-mile loop and the elevation gain is just 203 feet.
The view from the top is spectacular. It's beautiful all year-round, but imagine it during peak fall foliage! That's a great time to go.
From the top of the tower, you can see Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and Canada.
Be careful going up and down the stairs and hold onto the railing.
The park has been renovated recently. During that renovation, they added four yurts to the campround.
The yurts are 16 feet in diameter and sleep up to six people in twin bunk beds, a full-sized futon, and a futon chair. Every yurt also has a picnic table and fire pit outside.
The yurts are dry and secure and are great for people who don't want to camp in a tent. They're especially good for families. A wide deck is great for sitting outside on nice days.
You may be lucky enough to spot a moose!
You'll love the tower and you'll love the yurts. In fact, you'll love everything about this park. Plan a trip today.
