If you know me, you also know that I hike a lot. I've been to lots of places but there's still so much more to explore, even in my own backyard here in southern New Hampshire. Tucked away in the small town of Amherst is one such place: the nearly 600-acre Joe English Reservation, which I had never visited until just recently. After walking a good portion of the trails in the reservation, I'm sure I'll be back to check out the rest.
After a spring snowstorm and some gray days, I was very much enjoying being out in the sunshine at Joe English Reservation in Amherst.
The remains of the former 19th-century Peabody Mill can be seen after just a short walk from the main trailhead at the end of Brook Road.
There were interpretive signs along several of the trails I walked that either indicated historical sites or interesting natural features within the reservation.
This small pond off Bacon Trail was a perfect place for a break. Up to this point, I hadn't seen a single person all morning. Aside from the occasional duck, it was quiet here too.
I admit the pond was a difficult place to leave. The sun was out and I had the place to myself! What could be better?
Pretty soon, this vernal pool will be teeming with life. I checked for salamander eggs, but nothing yet. I did hear some wood frogs elsewhere in the reservation though.
The main access point for Joe English Reservation is at the end of Brook Road in Amherst. Another trailhead is located to the east on Chestnut Hill Road. For more information and to download a trail map, visit the Town of Amherst's website or the Amherst Conservation Commission.
As I write this article, there is yet another spring snowstorm moving in (not cool!). However, when the snow is gone and when you no longer need winter gear, check out these fun things to do once spring decides to settle in for the season!
