When you want to get away from it all, an island is the perfect place to go. You are literally disconnected from land, and if anyone wants to find you, they'll have to take a boat. If you turn off your cell phone and tell them you didn't have service, they'll believe you, because you were on an island oasis. That's what makes New Hampshire's Isle of Shoals the perfect place to escape.
We know what you're thinking: "The Isle of Shoals isn't little known." But while it may be true that most people in New Hampshire have heard of these islands, it's also true that very few New Hampshire residents have actually visited them. If you haven't, you're missing out.
The Isle of Shoals has everything you want in an escape. There is the sea air, and sound of the waves crashing. There's the distance - the series of islands is 6 miles off the New Hampshire coast. And then there's the beauty, complete with a lighthouse.
In Gosport Harbor you can even find some sand to sink your toes into.
Just beware of the sharks!
In all serious, there is no need to worry. This harmless basking shark is trying to escape from it all too. The Isle of Shoals is a great place to catch a sight of marine wildlife, including whales, purposes, and yes, sharks.
The stark architecture on the islands reminds you that you really are removed from the mainstream.
The islands have a long and storied history, with rumors of pirates, murders and ghosts. However, now they are the perfect place to relax and enjoy the charm of a centuries old seaside village.
The sunsets will wow you, and so will the moon.
So next time you need to escape from it all, head to The Isle of Shoals Steamship Company in Portsmouth and let them whisk you away to your own island oasis. You won't regret it.
Enjoy!
