One of the Granite State's long-distance hiking routes is the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway (MSG), which stretches 48 miles between Mt. Monadnock and Mt. Sunapee. It's a gem of a trail here in southern New Hampshire and I love to visit it due to the number of day hike options it provides. One of my favorite sections is in the town of Stoddard, where the trail traverses a long ridge lined with blueberry barrens. And my favorite route to get there is a side trail off the MSG known as Barney Brook Trail. It's one New Hampshire hiking trail you shouldn't miss.
The hike to Jackson Hill begins in the town of Washington, but along the way, you'll cross over into Stoddard.
When I visited here in late July of 2023, there was already a hint of autumn in the air. All it takes is a few cool nights, even in late summer, for the foliage color to begin changing.
Hikes that feature views or end with a big vista on top are great, but so are the ones where the scenery lies at your feet.
Reaching the grassy summit of Jackson Hill is always a pleasurable experience. It always feels so peaceful up here.
If you visit Jackson Hill, bring a container! Much like neighboring Hubbard Hill, Jackson Hill's summit is loaded with blueberry shrubs.
If you're picking blueberries up here, be sure to stay on any established paths to avoid trampling the vegetation.
A parting shot from the summit - it was a glorious weather day so it was hard to leave, but I can always return!
Jackson Hill is a fairly easy walk along a mellow New Hampshire hiking trail, is perfect for a sunny day, and is ideal for beginner hikers. For more information, visit the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail Club. Their trail map covers Barney Brook Trail, which I used for this visit.
As mentioned earlier, the ridge where Jackson Hill is located is a haven for berry pickers. Explore more at neighboring Hubbard Hill and Pitcher Mountain:
