In New Hampshire, getting outside isn't just something you do for exercise. It's a way to find peace, quiet and yourself. Getting outside has myriad benefits, but being fit is just one of them. Most importantly, it offers a way to remember our place in the world. And, nothing does that more than finding yourself at the top of a peak and looking down at all that lies below. Many times we assume that those sky high views we see on the internet are only accessible to those with fancy hiking boots and hours to spend going uphill. But, the reality is that there are many hikes that you can take without even breaking a sweat. This easy hike to great views in New Hampshire is just one example.
Mt. Kearsarge is located in Winslow State Park in the town of Wilmot.
While not completely flat, this trail is easy enough for kids and allows visitors to drive up a good portion of the mountain to the beginning of the trail head. This cuts down on tons of walking, allowing you to see the incredible views with less-than-expected exertion.
There are two trails leading up the mountain, the Winslow Trail and the Barlow Trail, which both begin at the same sign post.
The Winslow Trail is a bit more difficult, so make sure to take the Barlow Trail to the top if you're looking for something less strenuous.
The Barlow Trail has easier footing compared to the rockier Winslow trail and when things get steep you'll find that it's not quite as noticeable. The bottom of the trail meanders through the forest, adding some great forest-views to the fun.
The Barlow Trail is about 1.8 miles. While slightly longer than the Winslow Trail it's a much easier walk.
After arriving at the summit, you'll find picnic tables and places to sit.
You'll also find the fire tower, which some say removes from the view. Others love that you can go inside to explore when it's open.
But, the best part of this hike is the view you'll get on a clear day.
It stretches across New Hampshire and into Vermont.
And if you're visiting in the fall, the colors are fabulous.
This hike is even doable in the winter, but you won't be able to drive up to the trailhead so be prepared for a much longer trek.
Easy enough for kids, fun for adults, the Mt. Kearsarge Barlow Trail will take you to the top of the world without the huge effort some might expect.
