New Hampshire is a beautiful state to be in if you love to get outside. And, with weather that makes us feel like exploring, the many forests and lakes here are a wonderful treat. One of our favorite places to visit is this one! This lake is surrounded by beautiful forest and it has the added benefit of being fresh and clean!
Located in Grafton County, the 2.5-mile wide and 6-mile long Newfound Lake is one of the largest in the state. It’s third only behind Winnipesaukee and Squam Lakes. But, it’s often overlooked.
Most impressively, this lake is also considered to be the cleanest! One reason for that is its size. The water reaches 183-feet deep at its deepest point, which makes for a lot of water moving around.
And the land surrounding it is relatively undeveloped, which helps it remain clear of possible contaminants and pollutants.
Couple this with the fact that locals work hard to keep it clean, Newfound Lake is sometimes considered to be the cleanest lake in the country!
We recommend making a trip to this lake in just about any season. There are at least 22 species of fish and its size makes for a long shoreline. There are a number of trails nearby, too.
If you prefer to actually be on the water, there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore by boat.
Folks also love to visit just to be around the lake. It’s wonderful for stargazing and taking in the sunset.
And, for those who love swimming Wellington State Park in Bristol is directly on the lake’s shores. In fact, it’s home to the longest freshwater beach in the state.
Swim, fish, canoe, or simply spend your time enjoying the lake from the shore. There’s plenty of space to explore.
With such clean, clear water you’ll be coming back again and again.
You can learn more about Newfound Lake and Wellington State Park on the New Hampshire State Parks website here. For more outdoor explorations you'll want to check out this 4-hour road trip around Coos County waterfalls. It's a glorious spring adventure right here in New Hampshire!
