As a hiker, and someone who loves big vistas from a mountain summit, sometimes I'm not up to making the big climb to get them. Getting up to a low viewpoint is just fine when I'm short on time or energy. One of these viewpoints is the most excellent panorama from the top of Cathedral Ledge in Bartlett. Located within a small state park, it's one of the best scenic outlooks in New Hampshire that is available to everyone either by foot or by car.
For those who want a great view without investing in the gear to climb a summit, the Cathedral Ledge in Bartlett is easily attainable to anyone.
The view from Cathedral Ledge over the Mt. Washington Valley is one of the best in the region for the effort involved. A prominent landmark in the vista is the high summit of Kearsarge North.
One of the things I love to do while visiting here (but won't do myself!) is watching climbers scaling the 700-foot near-vertical wall of the ledge.
Needless to say, be sure to only watch the climbers and don't interfere with them in any way. Their sport is risky enough as it is!
Instead of driving, hikers can also approach Cathedral Ledge on foot from trails that begin at nearby Echo Lake State Park.
Since the view on Cathedral Ledge faces to the east, it's a prime spot to wake up early and get on top for a stunning sunrise if the weather conditions are right.
Cathedral Ledge is accessible in winter but the auto road is closed in winter. So you'll need to strap on those snowshoes or skis before ascending the road.
For a short trek to one of the best scenic outlooks in New Hampshire, Cathedral Ledge is hard to beat. For more information, visit the Cathedral State Park website. If visiting during the cooler months, be sure to stay warm as the ledge's exposure can make things pretty chilly.
Also on the subject of state parks, here are eight lesser-known New Hampshire state parks that are definitely worth a visit.
