In the southwestern corner of New Hampshire lies its largest state park, Pisgah State Park, which covers over 13,000 acres. Compared to some of the state's busier parks, Pisgah sees fewer visitors and therefore has a somewhat wilder feel. In addition to minor hills and summits, the park is also home to numerous ponds, swamps, and marshes. One of the largest of these is Kilburn Pond. It's also quite accessible to reach, which in my opinion, makes it one of the best hikes near Keene, NH.
Pisgah State Park sprawls across parts of three towns — Winchester, Chesterfield, and Hinsdale — and is open year-round for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and other activities (on certain trails).
The hike around Kilburn Pond begins at a trailhead along Route 63 in Hinsdale. A 0.6-mile walk along Kilburn Road leads to the loop portion of the route.
Walking the loop around the pond is pretty easy, as the route mainly follows old roads. The entire loop is a 6.3-mile trek with a 350-foot elevation gain.
Along the way, Kilburn Loop passes Kilburn Pond's outlet brook, picturesque wetlands, and attractive hemlock forests.
Various ledge outcroppings along the trail allow for rest breaks or just to sit in the sun and take in the sounds of Kilburn Pond.
Early morning visitors may want to keep their voices down and walk softly in hopes of spotting the pond's resident wildlife.
Kilburn Loop is a hike that can be done all year long, with autumn being an especially beautiful time due to the bright foliage.
Some might state that the park as a whole is the best hike near Keene, NH due to its enormous size and wide variety of hike options. For more information and to download a trail map, visit the Pisgah State Park website and also consult the AMC Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide.
If hiking near water is your thing (like it is mine), take an easy stroll near Great Bay, walk an old railroad grade to visit two ponds, or check out even more waterfront walks. Enjoy your hike!
