We’re all well aware of the handful of places in Nevada that get the most traffic. Most Silver State adventurers can say they've been to iconic places like Valley of Fire or Lake Tahoe. These destinations are great, but there is so much more to our state than the few places that get the most shots on Instagram. If you're really in the mood for adventure, seek out the spots in our state that don't get a lot of attention. Listed below are just some of Nevada's best-kept secrets and most underrated destinations. How many can you say you've been to?
1. Clark County Wetlands Park
Clark County Wetlands Park may be the largest park in the county, but many people stumble upon this natural oasis by surprise. Located on the east side of the Las Vegas Valley, this park is one of the last things you'd expect to see in the middle of the southern Nevada desert. The wetlands habitat is full of native plant life and wildlife, making this a true "urban oasis" that every Nevadan should visit.
2. Big Bend of the Colorado
Located on the shores of the Colorado River, this state recreation is a delightful surprise just south of Laughlin. The recreation area boasts dramatic views of the river and surrounding mountains. It's a paradise for outdoor recreation including swimming, fishing, picnicking, and boating.
3. 12 Mile Hot Springs
This lovely primitive hot spring is located just 12 miles north of the town of Wells. The long, man-made pool is roughly 40-feet long and averages about 100-degree water all year long. Soaking here will make you feel far away from civilization. Although the hot springs are relatively easy to access as long as you have a reliable vehicle, this place is known for the sweet serenity that comes with it.
4. Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area
Okay, so this place may be pretty well-known among Nevadans, but the rest of the world seems to have no clue that this awe-inspiring region even exists. It's hard to believe that one of the largest tourist destinations in the country, Las Vegas, is just a few miles away! Boasting tons of natural beauty and the fascinating Sloan Petroglyph Site, this conservation area is a must-see.
5. Kershaw-Ryan State Park
Tucked away in a colorful canyon with towering, 700-foot tall walls, Kershaw-Ryan State Park is a vibrant oasis in the desert. Covering an area of 256 acres, you'll find it located just two miles south of Caliente. Not only is the canyon absolutely beautiful, but the region's history is incredibly fascinating. This is a little-known corner of Nevada that's definitely worth exploring.
6. Wolf Creek Golf Club
This one is for the golfing enthusiasts! Did you know that Nevada is home to one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world? The golf course itself weaves beautifully in and out of desert canyons, blending two different atmospheres perfectly together. Even non-golfers can appreciate the abundant beauty of this place.
7. Echo Canyon State Park
Surrounding a 65-acre reservoir, Echo Canyon State Park truly showcases the unique beauty of eastern Nevada. Located 12 miles east of Pioche, the park encompasses a whopping 1,800 acres and features all types of great outdoor activities. Fishermen will enjoy the beautiful lake while campers and hikers will love exploring the trails and abundant wildlife.
8. Van Sickle Bi-State Park
Straddling the border of Nevada and California, Van Sickle Bi-State Park is a truly unique destination. Although it overlooks one of Nevada's most iconic destinations—Lake Tahoe—few people have seen this park for themselves. The state park is famous for its scenic hiking trails, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
