Lean in...I have a little secret to share with those of you who love nature. If you prefer a trail or a park where you won't see anyone or, at the very least, not too many people, there are five spots you should check out this month. For some peace and quiet without distraction, these are among the quietest trails and parks in Nevada:
1. Grimes Point Archaeological Area Trail
How about a hike with a side of ancient history? Intrigued? Then make your way to Grimes Point Archaeological Area where you'll find basalt boulders covered in petroglyphs carved by Native Americans around 8,000 years ago. There are interpretive signs for this part of the trail but you can certainly extend your hike beyond this point. It's also a great trail for children if you're on the lookout for kid-friendly trails in Nevada.
2. Lamoille Stock Trail
Located within the 90,000-acre Ruby Mountains Wilderness, Lamoille Canyon is considered "Nevada's Yosemite." Within this area, you will find Lamoille Stock Trail, a moderately challenging 3-mile, out-and-back trail that leads to Lamoille Lake, Lamoille Creek, and the Dollar Lakes. Due to the remoteness of this trail, you probably won't run into anyone else.
3. Stone Cabin Trail
The 5-mile, out-and-back Stone Cabin Trail gives exceptional views of both wildlife and sandstone rock formations, not to mention a historic stone cabin and its root cellar by the trailhead. If you enjoy geology, historic sites, and solitude, this Pioche, Nevada trail is for you. Maybe I'll see you there!
4. Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park
We all know that dinosaurs once roamed the earth, but did you know that includes parts of Nevada? In fact, you can visit Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park and see for yourself where these extinct creatures used to live. You can also see an Ichthyosaur fossil which happens to be the Nevada state fossil! Take the kids along for a fascinating hike at this massively underrated state park this month.
5. Sugarloaf Peak Open Space
For those of you who love an adventure, go for a hike to Sugarloaf Peak which is located at Sugarloaf Peak Open Space. Take the 5.4-mile, out-and-back trail to the peak and you'll have an extraordinary panoramic view of the town of Sparks along with a mountain range in the distance. This trail may be challenging but it's quite peaceful as well.
