You never know what you'll come across at the end of a Nevada hiking trail. Yes, everybody knows that it's all about the journey and not the destination. However, sometimes the destination is just as sweet as the journey, as you'll come to realize on the Robber's Roost Trail in the Spring Mountains. This unique hiking trail is short but steep, and hikers who climb to the top will be rewarded with the sight of a couple of limestone caves. There's even some fascinating history associated with these caves, so read on to check it out!
Looking for a quick hiking trail with some outstanding views? The Robber's Roost Trail near Mount Charleston is bound to satisfy. This short but steep trail definitely has a big payoff and it will even lead you straight to some fascinating limestone caves.
You'll find the trailhead located in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Simply drive towards the Spring Mountains Visitor Center and continue for approximately 17-miles before turning onto Deer Creek Road. Keep driving for 3.5-miles to the paved parking area.
The hike itself is super short at just under half a mile. From the trailhead, you'll be led through a landscape of pine trees, white firs, and rabbitbrush. The trail then starts to take you through the canyon. As the canyon narrows, the trail will begin to steepen.
There are some steep sections near the end of the trail but don't let that deter you from taking advantage of this adventure. Simply take it nice and slow and you'll be rewarded with the sight of two incredible limestone caves at the end!
These caves are truly mesmerizing. The cave on the north wall of the canyon is much bigger than the second one on the south wall, but they are both worth exploring. Legend even has it that these caves were used as a hideout by horse thieves back in the 1880s.
Some people go as far to say that there is still treasure stashed here that was stolen by the bandits more than a century ago. We can't say for sure if there's any truth to this rumor, but it certainly makes for a good story...and a good reason to see these caves for yourself.
Overall, Robber's Roost Trail is the type of hike that has it all. It's a good workout, boasts awe-inspiring views from Mt. Charleston, and even leads you to some unique canyon caves. Be sure to add it to your adventure bucket list and make this trek soon.
