As much as we wish we could, driving out to the remote wilderness for an adventure every day simply isn't an option. Sigh. However, that doesn't mean we can't satisfy that craving for the outdoors. There are many spots around Nevada's urban centers where you can escape for a few hours and surround yourself with nature. The hike to Huffaker Park Lookout outside of Reno is the perfect example of a serene adventure that's in our own backyard!
An oasis of natural beauty and scenic views can be found right in the middle of suburban southeast Reno. When you feel like stretching your legs but don't have a lot of time to venture, a visit to Huffaker Park is bound to satisfy.
Specifically, the Huffaker Park Lookout Trail boasts a decent stroll over rolling hills and undeveloped land, all while boasting gorgeous views of the city below. Managed by the City of Reno, the trail makes for a short hike that packs a punch.
The gravel trail is well-maintained and wide. With only 240-feet in elevation gain, it's an easy-breezy stroll that's perfect for a leisurely adventure either solo or with your family.
The trail meanders around two hills, with separate and unofficial dirt trails stretching up to the summit of each hill. Along the way, you'll spot many informational signs that provide information about the area's flora, fauna, and unique geology.
It seems like no matter where you are on the trail, an incredible view awaits. If you make it to the top of the hills, you'll be treated to pristine vistas of Nevada's Virginia Range on the east and the Carson Range on the west.
Situated alongside the trail on its western side is a lovely gazebo, ideal for sitting and basking in the glorious beauty the area has to offer. The trail is only 1.7-miles-long in all, so take your time and enjoy the views.
To get to the Huffaker Park Lookout Trail, take E. Huffaker Lake in Reno east and turn right on Offenhauser Drive. Take advantage of the free street parking before walking through Huffaker Park to the trailhead, which you'll find immediately after a small bridge. Happy hiking!
