Nevada has some fantastic skiing spots (and it should, considering our state name means "snowy!"). Ski season around here generally runs from December to early April, although depending on the weather that year, you could see some of the resorts below opening as early as November only to close later in April than usual. Here are five spots with the best skiing in Nevada:
1. Diamond Peak
Diamond Peak Ski Resort is located in Incline Village by Lake Tahoe. The resort recently celebrated its 50th birthday! The resort is owned by the local community, which tries to keep skiing here affordable for everyone. There is a school for skiers and snowboarders, and if you don't have equipment, no worries! You can rent gear when you arrive. Skiing at Diamond Peak means incredible views of the mountains and Lake Tahoe as you cruise down the slopes. There's also a good mix of trails, with 36% geared toward advanced skiers, 46% for mid-range skiers, and 18% desginated for beginners. They also have a special area designed just for children called Pete's Playground! The lodge at the mountain base has a food court, bar, snack bar, and a BBQ restaurant for your dining needs. You can get updates on snow and weather conditions on their website (and even watch their mountain cam!)
2. Mount Rose
Mount Rose is also near Lake Tahoe. It's the highest base resort in the area, at 8,260 feet! Skiers at Mount Rose can enjoy stunning views of the mountains and even Lake Tahoe itself by way of some of its runs. This resort has a good mix of beginners' and advanced trails. Lessons are available in both skiing and snowboarding, and the resort offers specialty clinics for children and seniors. Equipment rentals are also available. Visit their website for up-to-date weather information and watch their web cams of the lodge, one of the ski runs and their Northwest ski lift. Find it in Reno.
3. Lee Canyon Resort
Lee Canyon Resort is open December through March. The resort has 30 snow trails and three chairlifts, as well as a snow tubing area, too. Lee Canyon is part of the Spring Mountains, about an hour's drive from Las Vegas. Skiing and snowboarding equipment is available for rent, and the resort offers free coaching, too. Private lessons are also offered. A special "Snow Kids" program was created for children. Snow tubing is also offered occasionally, depending on weather conditions. Two restaurants and a bar are located at the day resort, in addition to a pro shop and gift shop. You can even spot a wild horse or two by the parking lots enjoying the snowpack!
4. Elko Snobowl Ski and Bike Park
The SnoBowl in Elko is run as a non-profit 501c3 organization. The park is located just outside of Elko. SnoBowl has a peak elevation of 7,000 feet and a 99-chair, 700 feet vertical double chairlift. There is a rope tow available as well. The park is run by volunteers with its own ski patrol. You can rent equipment at the ski lodge at the base of the hill. Snowboarding, sledding and snowshoeing are also options. The park is located at North 5th Street in Elko County. Check out the official Facebook page for more information.
5. Ruby Mountain Heli Experience
For something really unique, try the Ruby Mountain Heli Experience. A helicopter flies you to the Ruby Mountains backcountry to ski some incredible trails you won't reach with a typical chair lift. Trails can be found that accommodate all skill levels. If weather conditions prohibit flying the copters, guests can be transported up the mountain with a snowcat. Guests can stay in yurts at 9,700 feet that sleep 4 people. A camp chef prepares meals and the yurts are warmed with propane fireplaces. If they're not up for the wilderness camping experience, there's a hotel in town guests can use instead. You will need to bring your own equipment as there are no pro or rental shops in the area for you to use. You'll definitely want to check out the official website for all the rules and regulations, and to plan your adventure.
