Nevada is home to some pretty epic hiking trails, including the one featured here. The Historic Railroad Trail is a popular trail in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This simple hike takes you through several large abandoned train tunnels. Not only does it boast some gorgeous panoramic views, but the hiking trail shares a unique history with the construction of the Hoover Dam. Located near Boulder City is the trailhead for the Historic Railroad Trail. The trail stretches for nearly four miles and leads you through abandoned train tunnels while providing breathtaking views of Lake Mead. The trail ultimately ends up at an incredible overlook of the Hoover Dam.

The trail is simple and well-maintained, making it perfect for hikers of all skill levels. The trail underwent renovation last year in order to smooth it out and make it more easily accessible.

This simple hike has everything you could dream of. Awe-inspiring views of Lake Mead in the distance make the perfect backdrop to this beautiful hike.

You'll come across five tunnels on the hiking trail. You'll reach the first tunnel approximately a mile from the trailhead. The tunnels are simply massive. They are 25 feet in diameter and 300 feet in length.

The tunnels were originally constructed to be over-sized in order to transport large equipment to the dam. Construction began in 1931 and resulted in 30 miles of railroad which connected Boulder City to the Hoover Dam.

Use of the railroad dwindled after the dam was completed in 1935. It was officially closed off from further use in 1961. There's something incredible about being able to hike through these tunnels, which helped in the construction of one of our nation's greatest landmarks.

After you reach the fifth tunnel, the trail winds through some hillsides and industrial areas before rewarding you with an epic view of the one-and-only Hoover Dam. From here you can go down to the Hoover Dam Visitor Center or make your way back to the trailhead.

This is by far one of the most unique hiking trails in Nevada. It's a must-do for any outdoors lover (or history lover). We're lucky to be able to hike through one of Nevada's most historic spots. It's a privilege that must be taken advantage of!

To reach the trailhead at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, drive south on I-515 from Interstate 215. From there, turn left onto State Route 166. Signs will point you to the Lake Mead Visitor Area.
