The Platte River draws its water from snowmelt from the Colorado Rockies at the Continental Divide. The river flows a total of 900 miles, more than 580 of which are in Nebraska. And for some of those miles, you can break out your kayak and cruise down the scenic river.
The 70-mile Platte River Water Trail runs between Fremont and Plattsmouth. Access points along the route allow boaters to hop on at any point in the trail.
Boat rental companies recommend planning your trip before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. to avoid crowds. A typical outing will last several hours, but lunch may need to be on the water. Boaters are required to be mindful to not beach their boats on private property bordering the water.
While enjoying the scenery you might spot Sandhill Cranes, one of the many bird species common around the Platte River.
Dogs are allowed to join canoers are they coast down the river, as long as they adhere to the National Park Guidelines that apply to beach access.
Fall Water Trail trips are educational, as well. Boaters can spot the salmon run along the river and watch the seasonal change in action.
While paddling along the river can be a great workout, many boaters recommend floating down the beautiful waterway to enjoy the sights and sounds of local flora and fauna.
Nebraska is flush with photography-worthy scenery, but the Platte River Water Trail is a particularly lovely way to see a slice of the state.
