Nebraska is such a big place that there are bound to be lots of little-known hidden gems - those places that you only know about if you happen to live nearby. The Horn T Zoo near Monroe in Platte County is a sweet little place that, unless you've seen it yourself, you've probably never heard of.
Just west of Monroe on Highway 22, the little zoo sits on a 40-acre ranch.
Open since 2011, the zoo is home to a few dozen common and exotic animals.
Some of the animals that call Horn T Zoo home are zebras, monkeys, albino raccoons, a kangaroo, a pony, wildebeests, and exotic birds and cats.
The zoo is popular with families in the area, but it's equally beloved by schools and other children's groups.
Horn T has a USDA animal exhibitor permit, so you can be assured the animals are well cared for. Not that you'll have any question - this place is clean and the animals are obviously doted on by their caretakers.
The people who run the zoo are knowledgeable and friendly, and they are happy to show off the animals and answer any questions.
The zoo offers hands-on experiences for kids of all ages, giving them the chance to get up close and personal with animals.
Nebraska is known internationally for its big zoo in Omaha, but the sweet little Horn T is a smaller, less expensive alternative.
The zoo is open summers only on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's always best to check with the zoo before you head out to be sure it's open.
