Fall is no doubt the greatest time for a hike in Nebraska. The lovely colors, the crisp air, the milder temperatures, and the crunch of leaves under your feet all add up to a memorable hiking experience. There are so, so many terrific places to hike in Nebraska, and today we're taking you to Chalco Hills Recreation Area in Sarpy County.
Wehrspann Lake is the centerpiece of this 1,186-acre recreation area.
The main trail around the lake is 7 miles long and passes through some seriously beautiful scenery.
In the fall, the bright colors here make the already picturesque trail even prettier. The way isn't completely flat, as you may have guessed from the name of the recreation area, which adds some variety to the paved path.
The trail is pretty popular, so on the weekends and especially nice days you can expect to have some company on your walk.
However, it's rarely overwhelmingly crowded. You can bring your dog along as long as it's leashed at all times.
You'll likely encounter some wildlife along the trails. It's not uncommon for deer to come dashing out across the trail, and there are plenty of turkeys and even bald eagles.
There are lots of picnic spots in the recreation area. You might even come across little surprises like this sweet fairy house at the base of a tree.
If you choose to leave the main trail, you can also set off along one of the wooded nature trails that branch off into lovely adventures.
Chalco Hills is a special place to spend a day enjoying nature by yourself or with friends or family. It's so peaceful that you'd never know you were so close to the city, but it's easily accessible so if you're coming from the Omaha metro area you won't have to drive hours to get there.
