Nebraskans are, by and large, serious outdoors people. We'd rather be playing outside than doing just about anything else, so it makes sense that our state parks are such beloved places. Our very first state park was established in 1921 and has been a favorite destination ever since.
Chadron State Park is located in far northwestern Nebraska, just south of the city of Chadron.
It sits on the Pine Ridge, one of the region's most scenic natural areas.
The eponymous pine trees, craggy buttes, and serene canyons all contribute to the park's stunning appearance.
But this park isn't just for looking at - far from it, actually.
There are minimal frills here; most visitors prefer to be entertained by nature and the unique land of the area.
Mountain biking is very popular here, and once you experience these thrilling ridges you'll see why.
You'll also find hikers making their way around the various trails. There's so much to explore here that you could hike for days and still not see it all. Watch out for rattlesnakes!
Extending your stay over multiple days is always a great idea. Bring your tent or RV, or rent one of the park's 22 cabins.
There are, of course, a few frills. Visitors can enjoy paddle boats, archery, tennis and sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a softball field, playgrounds, historical programs, a disc golf course, a winter sledding hill, evening programs, trail rides, and a trading post.
There's also an outdoor pool here that's awesome fun all summer. It's the perfect way to cool off after a day of hiking, grilling, trail riding, and archery - or whatever it is you decide to get up to during your day at the park.

The nearby town of Crawford is well known as one of the most beautiful places in the state. It's the perfect day trip when you're staying at Chadron State Park! Read more about the town here.
