There are certainly many ways to take in the nature found throughout Montana. There are hikes that range from beginner to advanced, each one more scenic than the one before. There are also hotels and rentals with views for miles. And, of course, many of us can simply step outside our homes to take in the scenic views around us. All of these are great, but there's something about a scenic drive in Montana that offers something extra-special. One of our favorites leads to an incredible waterfall, but the journey might be even better.
By scenic highway standards, the Skalkaho Highway is probably considered fairly short. At less than 60 miles, it certainly won't take longer than an hour or so.
However, it's undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous roadways in the state and it's worth every mile. The route travels between the Bitterroot Valley and the Philipsburg Valley. To start from the Bitterroot Valley in the west, head to Hamilton. Alternatively, you can begin the drive in the east in Philipsburg.
The best thing is that it offers so much more than just a road trip. While some scenic highways offer views from the window, this one offers plenty of things to stop and see.
One of the most beautiful is Skalkaho Falls. Located about halfway along the route, at the top of the pass, the waterfall is almost a surprise when it comes into view.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. But there is one hike in particular that is perfect for most skill levels, and it offers breathtaking mountain views all along its path toward one of the most stunning waterfalls in the state. Found within the expansive Custer Gallatin National Forest is Passage Falls Trail. The trailhead is shared with the Wallace Creek Trailhead, so just pay special attention to the signs to ensure you're heading off in the right direction.
Before you start off on your hiking adventure, I highly recommend that you download AllTrails+ so that you can download the offline trail maps, which include topographic and other detailed trail maps. You can also record and track your progress, including elevation gain, and get a full 3-D view of the trail before you head off on your trek.
Along this 5.1-mile trail, you can expect a relatively flat hike that crosses over Passage Creek a couple of times. Be sure to pause and take in the sights and sounds of the peaceful stream.
You'll notice some areas of fallen trees due to past wind storms and other weather events. But if you're hiking this trail in the summertime, you'll also likely encounter some beautiful wildflowers, so keep an eye out!
Due to the relative ease of the hike, expect that you'll likely encounter others on the trail. But I recommend heading out early in the morning on a weekday to minimize crowds.
Ultimately, Passage Falls Trail is a beautiful, relatively easy hike for those wanting to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Montana. I have no doubt you'll add this trail to your favorites list as soon as you complete it!
