Nothing cures a bad day (or a lingering case of cabin fever) like breathing in the fresh, Montana air, preferably away from everyone else in the world. If you happen to be near Big Sky, the eight-mile Cinnamon Mountain Trail delivers all that and more. If the incline doesn't take your breath away, the views definitely will.
The Cinnamon Mountain Trail is about eight miles long and is ranked as moderate on AllTrails.
If you're a fairly experienced hiker and you're up for a bit of a challenge, you'll love where this trail takes you.
Wind through patches of forests and grassy meadows as you ascend the mountain.
The climb starts out fairly gently, but expect steep switchbacks as you hike higher.
The trail follows Cinnamon Creek for the first 2.5 miles to a junction, which takes you to the ridge.
It's easy to see why this trail is often used by people on horseback.
Climb higher and you'll be treated to views of Big Sky, the Spanish Peaks, the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area, and Gallatin Canyon
Take your time on this hike -- you'll want plenty of time to take it all in.
At last, you'll reach the Cinnamon Mountain Lookout.
Believe it or not, fire lookouts were not always placed on the highest points of these trails. It's more of a matter of picking a spot that has the best 360-degree views.
The fire lookout was built by the Forest Service in 1957.
While it was renovated in 1999, it is currently empty and public access is not allowed.
Allow a full day for this beautiful hike so you can enjoy it to the fullest.
Pack a picnic lunch and plenty of water, because you're going to want to stay as long as possible.
The Cinnamon Mountain Trail is open all year, but it's best enjoyed in the summer at the peak of wildflower season.
