When it comes to natural beauty, it's impossible to choose one area of Montana that's the best. The Rattlesnake National Recreation Area spans 28,000 acres near Missoula. It's right next door to the Rattlesnake Wilderness, for a total of 61,000 acres of spectacular natural beauty.
You'll find plenty of ways to explore this gorgeous recreational area; with 73 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, there's something for everyone.
The climb to Stuart Peak is grueling, but the view makes the effort well worth it.
Rattlesnake Creek is a popular spot for fly fishing and provides a pleasant, babbling soundtrack to your outdoor experience.
Several lakes dot the landscape here, and many are stocked with fish.
While you're exploring this area, stay alert for wildlife. You may encounter moose, elk, deer and even the occasional bear.
Visit the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area year-round. It's stunning in the summer...

...winter...
...and spring.
Rattlesnake National Recreation Area is just four miles north of Missoula, and is part of the Lolo National Forest.
