It’s a known fact that nearly everyone who lives in Montana avoids crowds whenever possible. But when it comes to our more popular destinations and tourist attractions, there’s really no avoiding large groups. Luckily, the Treasure State is large, and the population is small for its size. There are still quite a few places you can go and enjoy beautiful surroundings and solitude (or close to it).
1. Trout Creek
The Huckleberry Capital of Montana has a population of less than 300. And if you don’t go during the Huckleberry Festival in August or the Snowmobile Poker Run in February, you won’t see many crowds here. Stay at a cabin at the Lakeside Motel and Resort and enjoy the peace and quiet.
2. Rampart Mountain
If you’re looking for somewhere REALLY remote, head to the Bob Marshall Wilderness and find Rampart Mountain. It’s considered to be the most remote spot in the state, so if you can’t find solitude there, you never will. This is definitely a trip you’ll want to take in the spring or summer.
3. Medicine Rocks State Park
Located in the Ekalaka area, this 330 acre park is rural enough that it doesn’t attract as many visitors as some of the more centrally located attractions. But it’s definitely just as beautiful.
4. Radersburg
This tiny community in Broadwater County has a population of 66. More people can fit inside an Applebee’s than live in Radersburg. The trails in this area are a dream come true for hikers and four wheelers, with plenty of old gold mines and cabins to see.
5. Sweetgrass
People often forget about this quiet community that sits near the Canadian border. Though it does see its share of traffic from those going to and from Alberta, the town itself is quiet and crowd-free.
6. Coolidge Ghost Town
Most tourists tend to head to Bannack, but Coolidge is far less crowded and just as intriguing. The Elkhorn-Coolidge Historic District is located in Beaverhead County near Butte.
7. Gibson Dam
This hidden gem is located 20 miles from the nearest town along the Rocky Mountain Front, and the surrounding scenery is truly stunning.
8. Bighorn Canyon
There’s plenty of space for everyone at Montana’s Grand Canyon, which you’ll find at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area 80 miles south of Billings.
9. Gravelly Range Road from Ennis to the Centennial Valley
Need a quiet country drive to clear your head? This one offers wide open spaces and gorgeous views of the Rocky Mountains.
10. Paradise
Paradise is sparse in population, rich in scenery, and basically heaven on Earth for those who detest crowds.
Visiting remote areas is wonderful, but sometimes it's not enough. When you need to move somewhere to get away from it all, these Montana towns are perfect choices.
