We're nearing the end of hiking season here in Montana — unless you own snowshoes. But this just happens to be the perfect time of year to hit the trails and take in the beautiful scenery and breathe in some crisp autumn air. If you live within a short driving distance of Big Sky, check out the Ousel Falls Trail as soon as possible.
Ousel Falls Trail connects the Big Sky Town Center to Ousel Falls Park.
Named after the Ousel Bird, the trail is a mere 1.6 miles in length, and it's a nice, easy nature walk.

While the trail is accessible year-round, it's especially beautiful in the fall.
The autumn hues are pretty spectacular.
Eventually, you'll come to this extraordinary sight.
Autumn looks amazing on Ousel Falls.
Ousel Falls is often referred to as Big Sky's best-kept secret.
We happen to think the real secret is that the trail looks it's most beautiful in October.

It won't be long before most of Montana is covered in snow, so get out and explore this beautiful trail while you can.
The Ousel Falls Trail is one of Montana's most beautiful fall hikes. Here are some other trails to check out before winter.
If you have spent any time in the Treasure State, you know there are adventures around every corner. No matter where you may be, some places will capture your attention, make you fall in love with Montana, and help you create memories you will never forget. Trout Creek Canyon Trail is one of these destinations. While there are many hikes in Montana that I love, this trek is a journey that will truly inspire you. It’s full of beauty, isn’t too difficult, and you may come across a furry (and hopefully friendly!) creature or two. Trout Creek Canyon in Montana is where you’ll find an unforgettable adventure.

Located just a short drive from Helena in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest is the Trout Creek Canyon Trail. You will find the trailhead at the Vigilante Campground in the Helena Ranger District. This is a great trail for both mountain biking and horseback riding, but hiking is my favorite way to explore. By taking your time, you can truly appreciate the beauty of this area.
This out-and-back trail is approximately 6 miles round trip. There are some steeper areas you will climb and rocky portions of the path but the majority of the trail is fairly easy to follow and well maintained.
While it’s always important to watch your step, you must focus on the views surrounding you. You will follow a beautiful small stream and walk through forested areas and peaceful meadows. There are several stream crossings you will make, adding to the fun of the trail.
Despite being beautiful on all sides of you, as you reach the heart of the canyon, you must look up. The tall canyon walls surround you and make you feel like you’ve escaped all of your daily worries. It’s truly a breathtaking sight.
And you never know what you may find as you look around and explore. In the canyon, it isn’t uncommon to see animals of all shapes and sizes. Trout Creek Canyon is the heart of bear country and many hikers report stumbling across bears on their way. Come prepared with bear spray and bear bells and I recommend you do not hike this trail on your own. A bear encounter will certainly create an unforgettable adventure — one you may not want to remember.
Trout Creek Canyon Trail is delightful during the spring, summer, and fall months. However, if venturing during late spring or early fall, be prepared for snow on the trail. You are also welcome to bring Fido along with you, but he must remain on a leash during your trek. And it may be best to leave your children at home for this hike. While the journey is not too hard, it is quite long and the chance of bear encounters is high.
Trout Creek Canyon Trail is an adventure you may want to place high on your Montana bucket list. This area of the state is beautiful with much to see and enjoy. It’s where you’ll find an unforgettable adventure.

There is something about the fall in Montana that makes you want to spend all of your time outdoors. It could be the cooler weather, the dread of the upcoming snowy weather, or the vibrant fall foliage that transforms our great state. If you are like me, there is no better time to head out on a hike than in the autumn months, and Star Peak Lookout Trail is one that you may want to consider. This Montana trail is a bit challenging and nearly 9 miles long, but the views are stunning and when the autumn colors are at their peak, you’ll feel like you are walking through a fall foliage wonderland — it’s pure perfection.

The Star Peak Lookout Trail is located in the Kootenai National Forest, just a short drive from Noxon. You’ll find the trailhead near the Big Eddy Campground, along the Clark Fork River.
The Star Peak Lookout Trail deserves a spot on your bucket list ... but it’s not for beginning hikers. This hike is difficult with some steep and challenging climbs. You’ll want proper equipment and lots of endurance to tackle this trail.
And when I say there are some strenuous climbs, I mean it. This is an out-and-back trail that is just shy of nine miles. Throughout this trail, you will climb approximately 4,000 feet in elevation. The first half of this trail is a fairly steady climb. Make sure to take plenty of breaks to give your calves the rest they desperately need and deserve.
The second half of this adventure eases up slightly but it’s still a challenge as you’ll be quite tired from the first half of the hike. However, I recommend you don’t focus as much on the effort required to complete this hike but rather on the scenery surrounding you. You will capture beautiful views of both the Clark Fork River and Bull Lake along your way. And even just the mountain landscapes are enough to stop you in your tracks. You will certainly be trekking through beautiful country.
As you climb, you’ll make your way up to Star Peak Lookout. This is actually a unique destination as this was the first forest lookout tower in the area. You’ll not only enjoy the lookout tower at the top of your climb, but you'll spot an old stone cabin that was built in 1910. The Star Peak Lookout is on the National Historic Lookout Register.
The hike to the lookout is beautiful all year long, although, it is best during the summer and early fall months. When you tackle this trail in the fall, and when the colors are at their peak, you’ll feel like you are walking through a fall foliage wonderland. It’s a gorgeous escape from the worries of reality.
As you hike to Star Peak Lookout, make sure you pay attention to the weather as it isn’t uncommon to encounter snow as you climb. Keep an eye out for wildlife as well and always be prepared for any type of animal encounters. You can bring your favorite furry friend with you on this adventure but he or she must be kept on a leash at all times.
Star Peak Lookout is magnificent but tiring. It’s a hike that will challenge you in more ways than one. But, Mother Nature truly outdid herself here — the views and vibrant colors are unforgettable.
