There are two types of Montanans: Those who prefer to swim in pools, and those who will dive right into our ice-cold natural swimming holes on a hot summer day. If the latter sounds appealing to you, you'll definitely want to head to Devil's Glen, one of the best natural swimming holes in Montana. Nestled within the Lewis and Clark National Forest in Montana, not only will you get some great exercise, you'll enjoy a nice cool plunge on the trail.
Devil's Glen is a 5-mile trail located near Augusta in the beautiful Lewis and Clark National Forest.
The trail starts at the end of the Dearborn Canyon Road about 20 miles southwest of Augusta.
It’s an easy walk to the lower end of Devil’s Glen (2.5 miles in), so it's considered a good trail for families and beginners.
The trail parallels a private road for the first mile, then crosses the Dearborn River.
And about 2.5 miles in, you'll see this incredible natural swimming hole in Montana.
Here, the Dearborn flows out of a narrow canyon into a deep pool perfect for taking a dip on a hot day.
Pull up a rock and relax, or put on a swimsuit and enjoy the water.
Needless to say, since this is one of the best swimming holes in Montana, this spot is pretty popular in the summertime. if you want to beat the crowds, go early on a weekday, you'll have a better chance at enjoying some peace and quiet.
There are quite a few good places to wander near the trailhead to get a better view of the area.
However, no one will blame you if you choose to stay right here and enjoy a swim and a picnic lunch.
You'll have the option of continuing your hike and exploring more of the area, but if you're relaxed and cool, you might just want to head back.
Either way, this is a spectacular and fairly easy trail will quickly become your new favorite spot for the summer!
