Whether you've lived in Montana for five months or 50 years, you know Flathead Lake is both a local icon and a national treasure. In fact, you've probably spent time there, making beautiful memories and enjoying its numerous state parks and seemingly endless shoreline. But did you know that Flathead Lake is actually the most photographed lake in the nation? As photogenic as it is, that's really not surprising.
Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi in the lower 48 states.
This beauty is located in northwest Montana and surrounded by charming small towns.
The lake has 13 public access sites, and it's one of Montana's most popular destinations.
Recreation on and around the lake includes fishing, swimming, boating, water sports, camping, and good old-fashioned lakeside lounging.
It's not surprising that so many people love taking photos of this stunning lake.
Flathead is quite photogenic.
In addition to being a world-renowned travel destination, Flathead Lake is well known for its remarkably clear waters.
In fact, it's one of the cleanest lakes of its size and type anywhere in populated areas of the world. The lake is clear in part because it's low in nutrients that promote the growth of algae.

But all local legends and myths aside, it's easy to see why photographers love to take photos of this lake.
