We might be biased, but we happen to think Montana is a magnificent place to call home (the best, actually) in any season. And it's hard to top some of our mountain towns, canyons, and waterfalls trails in the summertime. But venture out during the winter and you'll see that our state's beauty is never buried beneath the snow... in fact, the snow seems to enhance it. If you've ever explored Hyalite Canyon this time of year, you've seen it for yourself.
The Hyalite Canyon Recreation Area is located in Gallatin County, just outside of Bozeman.
Between its three campgrounds and two day-use areas, this is the most heavily visited recreation area in Montana.
Of course, most Montanans visit in the summer when it's warm and sunny.
But we happen to think this area hits its peak in the wintertime.
The Hyalite Reservoir is the starting point for numerous hiking trails, ranging from short, easy day hikes to lengthier treks.
Of course, most of these will not be easily accessible in the winter. But you can always bring your snowshoes and find a place to explore. There are also some great Nordic ski trails.
Hyalite Canyon spans a total of 34,000 acres.
It's a part of the Gallatin National Forest.
The Hyalite Reservoir and Dam, which were constructed in the 1940s, draw a lot of visitors in the summer hoping to catch some trout.
The reservoir also serves as a main focal point in the canyon, surrounded by 10,000-foot mountain peaks, creeks, streams, and waterfalls.
You won't find many people exploring Hyalite in the off-season, which is a convincing reason to go.
It is known as an ice climbing destination due to being surrounded by high peaks and steep ridges. Obviously, we recommend leaving the ice climbing to the professionals.
Parts of Hyalite Canyon may not be accessible in the winter, for obvious reasons.
But if the weather permits, it's definitely worth taking a drive to the canyon and taking in the unparalleled seasonal beauty.
