Even lifelong Montanans have a list of local places they have yet to explore. The Treasure State is vast, and it's full of hidden gems. One such place is the Ross Creek Cedars Recreation Area nestled in the Libby area in the northwest corner of the state. When you're walking through it, you feel like you're in another world.
The Ross Creek Scenic Area is located on the Kootenai National Forest near Troy.
The road to reach the cedars is somewhat steep and winding, but most of it is paved.
Once you've arrived, park your car and hit the trail.
You can choose a picturesque and paved nature trail, a very easy walk with informational signs and benches along the route, or challenge yourself with the 4.5 mile Ross Creek Trail 142 route.
The further in you get, the more breathtaking the scenery is.
Some trees in the grove are more than 400 years old.
Some of these trees grow up to 12 feet in diameter and 175 feet in height.
In 1960, the Ross Creek Cedar grove was established as a scenic area, protecting it for scientific and recreational value.
This place is absolutely gorgeous.
And while there are no campsites in the grove itself, there are two campgrounds nearby.
The Ross Creek Cedars area is one of Montana's most gorgeous natural wonders.
