Winter might seem like an odd time to go hiking... and admittedly, many parts of the Treasure State simply aren't accessible after the first major snowfall. However, the coming snowy season is actually an excellent time to get outside and stretch your legs, assuming you have access to some local trails. If you happen to live near Billings, just had to the Four Dances Recreation Area and find the main trailhead for a winter scene like you've never seen.
The Four Dances Recreation Area is set on 765 acres of undeveloped open space just outside of Billings.
These public lands are known for their grasslands, ponderosa pine, rocky cliffs, and unparalleled views.
This stunning place is open all year, and it's a fantastic spot to visit in any season...
...but eventually, it turns into a peaceful winter wonderland.
You'll love seeing this place in the summertime, but winter is an underrated time to go.
The Four Dances Trail is a fairly easy 2.6-mile loop that takes you all around the area's top sights.
The trailhead is well-marked and easy to find, and then you'll just follow the loop.
This route includes the major highlights of Four Dances: the upper section, the descent to the river, and the sweeping city views.
