The largest freshwater lake west of the Missouri River and one of the cleanest lakes in the world, Montana’s Flathead Lake is a pristine destination for vacationers. Located only 40 miles southwest of Glacier National Park in the northwest part of the state, Flathead Lake attracts tourists for fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and wildlife watching.
With pine forests, clear water, and snow-capped mountains in the background, this glacial lake is one of the most stunning places to visit in a state with plenty of wonderful scenery.
The lake is renowned for its clear water. In the shallower parts of the lake, you can often see to the bottom. Pebble rock beaches are popular places for a swim.
The lake is big enough to hold several islands. The largest is Wild Horse Island, which is only accessible by boat. Visitors will find bighorn sheep, deer, eagles, and yes, wild horses.
Dotted around the lake are cute small towns such as Big Fork and Polson where you can grab dinner, catch a fishing charter, or stay the night. There is a range of accommodations including hotels, rental cottages, and bed and breakfasts.
There are several campgrounds found around the lake as well, with lakeside spots for that perfect sunrise.
You can even rent a lakeside yurt in Flathead Lake State Park.
Hiking along the lake’s trails or taking a drive on the roads that surround the lake lead to incredible vistas like this one:
The area’s mild climate is great for growing fruit, and there are many orchards near the lake. During the summer, you’ll find roadside stands selling cherries, peaches, jams, and more. Some orchards even let you pick your own cherries!
Between the scenery, wildlife watching, and water recreational choices, there’s plenty to do around Flathead Lake. Or, you can just drive a loop around the lake as a day drip from Kalispell or Glacier National Park.
