The great state of Missouri is home to gorgeous trails and waterfalls, but did you know that we have an amazing native grass prairie hiding in our own backyard? This beautiful and expansive spot can be found in the small central Missouri town of New Bloomfield.
Prairie Garden Trust is a nature garden rich in prairies, ponds and wooded areas.
As you make your way through the park from the visitors center, you'll be greeted by the aromatic scents of the hibiscus pond at Beaver Lake.
Masses of purple prairie blazing star can be seen in bloom.
The lotus pond has a viewing deck where guests can peer at the pond below with views of the prairies beyond.
In addition to the American lotus and water lilies, you'll also come across cattails, corkwood, ducks, herons, turtles and frogs.
It wouldn't be the Prairie Garden Trust without a prairie. Just south of the Prairie Garden Trust Center, you'll find the Indigo Prairie.
Since 1986, over 50 types of native grasses and flowers were planted to turn the field into a prairie.
About 200 years ago, about a third of Missouri was prairie, but now less than one percent remains. Part of Prairie Garden Center's mission is to enhance the remaining natural areas for the public to experience.
At times, Hillers Creek reveals the remnants of a 360 million-year old coral reef that was formed here back when seas covered the area.
Today, the area is home to home to pawpaw, sycamore, redbud and butternut trees and forms shallow pools from spring rainwater.
For true serenity, explore the Savannah area, which is located on the upland above Hillers Creek.
The Savannah is a sedge-covered area where the prairie and wooded area meet.
While here, walk towards the Valley Overlook for stunning views of the natural landscapes below.
Once you reach "The Point" you'll get to enjoy gorgeous views of the Ozark foothills below.
Don't let the cold temperature scare you off, Prairie Garden Trust can be enjoyed year-round.
However, I think I can speak for everyone when I say I'm pretty excited to see the garden center in bloom this spring.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I first discovered this hidden gem in Missouri. Prairie Garden Trust is open to the public, but guests must schedule their visit beforehand. To schedule your visit, click here for more information on their website.
