Big cities often hide quiet pockets of tranqulity, where we can escape when we need a break from the fast pace of life. This beautiful oasis in Missouri, tucked just outside of downtown Columbia, offers respite and the perfect opportunity to explore. Wait until you see the views, too!
Capen Park in Columbia covers just over 31 acres a little more than five minutes from downtown, making it the perfect destination for a quick break or an afternoon adventure.
The park welcomes visitors from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The picturesque park promises stunning beauty all year-around, with wildflowers dotting the landscape in the spring and summer.
Wear a comfy pair of shoes if you plan to explore the park's lone hiking trail. It's short, sweet, and tallies just about a half of a mile.
However, it offers an ideal opportunity to relax and drink in the sounds of nature. Be prepared for a steep climb, which could be difficult if you have little ones.
Fair warning, however: Those sounds of nature ARE mixed with everyday noise from the nearby roads.
The highlight of the trail is, arguably, the bluffs. They're popular with climbers and for their stunning views.
Both the bluffs and the park's scenic overlooks make it easy to catch a sensational sunset.
Capen Park also serves as a launching point for exploring the Grindstone Nature Area, which sits right next door.
The nature area has a .02-mile hiking trail, so you might want to add a visit after you've checked out Capen Park.
