Forest Park beckons visitors to explore its more than 1,300 acres brimming with such natural features as lakes, streams, and, of course, forests. It's the perfect place to get lost among nature for a few minutes, a few hours, or an entire day. One of the best ways to explore the expansive, gorgeous gem of St. Louis is to follow one of its hiking trails. The Picnic Island Loop Trail in Missouri, for example, will take you over a unique metal suspension bridge.
If you don't have a ton of time but want a hike that packs a whole lot of scenic punch, follow the Picnic Island Loop Trail, tucked in St. Louis's Forest Park.
Marvel at such stunning views as a cascading fountain and colorful wildflowers, as you make your way along the 1.1-mile loop trail.
With its predominately gravel and level terrain, the loop trail is rated easy, making it ideal for hikers of all ages and skill levels. It's also kid and dog-friendly.
One of the highlights of the trail is crossing the metal suspension bridge. It's not terribly high but can be a bit shaky, which could cause some queasiness in some hikers or pooches.
If you bring your pup along, just be prepared. Some hikers warn that their dogs refused to cross the suspension bridge, requiring them to change their route a bit.
The fairly thin bridge is made with metal grates and offers picture-perfect views as you cross over it.
Since the trail is sometimes quite quiet, you might even have the bridge all to yourself. Take advantage of the quiet to snap photos or to just stop and admire the view.
You might not see a lot of people on the trail, depending on when you visit, but you could run into some of the park's residents, including ducks.
Picnic Island Loop Trail is one of those trails that you'll want to see in each season. Just be prepared for slippery conditions if you visit during the winter or after rain.
