Hiking in Missouri is always a wonderful experience. However, Missouri summers get hot and humid. Hitting the pool after a long day outside is always a nice option but it's definitely not a refreshing as a swim in one of Missouri's spring fed rivers. At Sam A. Baker State Park you can hit the trails and splash around in the cool, rejuvenating waters of the St. Francois River. This gorgeous hike is one you won't want to miss!
Located in southeast Missouri, Sam A. Baker State Park has amazing trails, great swimming, and stunning views.
There are two great hiking trails that will take you to perfect swimming spots along the creeks and rivers that flow though the park. You'll also have the chance to see wet weather waterfalls along the way!
Shut-Ins Trail is a 1.35 mile, rugged trail. It takes hikers along the base of Mudlick Mountain and around Big Creek. The overview will give you a nice view of the creek, which is certainly enough to tempt you into the water.
Shut-Ins Trail also connects to Mudlick Trail. Mudlick Trail is a much more difficult hike and is about 5.5 miles. The trail crosses the creek three times and can be a bit difficult when the water is high. However, these crossings can be quite refreshing!
Swimming is also allowed in the St. Francios River. You'll find deeper areas along the river that are perfect for swimming or floating.
The river waters are nice and calm but swimming is at your own risk. Life jackets and swimming shoes are highly recommended.
Whether you choose to relax in the cool creek water or swim in the deeper river waters, it's a win-win! So enjoy a nice long hike with a refreshing swim this weekend at Sam A. Baker State Park.
Swimming is permitted from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. Find Sam A. Baker State Park at 9729, MO-143, Patterson, MO 63956.
