Stretching more than 2,500 acres in Christian County, Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area in Highlandville offers something to do for everyone - whether you're up for a refreshing hike or a bike ride.
Tucked in Highlandville, the state forest is around 20 minutes from Springfield and welcomes adventurers daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.
You'll find a full menu of activities in the wild area that's bursting with colorful wildflowers during the warmer months.
For a unique view of the picturesque landscape, explore on bike or horseback.
However, the most popular way to experience all Busiek Forest has to offer is by foot. Its more than half of a dozen hiking trails range from easy to moderate.
If it's short but sweet you're looking for, set off on the two-mile Busiek Red Loop Little Trail.
The kid-friendly trail promises natural beauty AND a historic cemetery. Cross a picturesque footbridge; pass shimmering water, and stop to smell the many wildflowers.
If you're up for a bit of a challenge, follow the 6.1-mile Red, Yellow, and Blue Trail. It's the forest's longest trail and leads to a beautiful waterfall.
You can even make a night of it, camping out at one of the individual campsites. However, a special use permit is required before you pitch your tent.
