Towering hickory and oak trees can be found in this ancient forest in Missouri. A trip to Big Oak Tree State Park in East Prairie is like stepping back in time hundreds of years. These very trees greeted some of Missouri's earliest explorers. You'll feel like you've stepped into a storybook when you visit Missouri's ancient forest.
Tucked into a bend of the Mississippi River is the beautiful Big Oak Tree State Park. Some of the largest trees in the state are located in this Missouri park!
Visitors can take the Boardwalk Trail to see some of these massive trees. The trail is less than a mile.
The unique metal boardwalk makes exploring though the park easy. However, the trail can get slippery in wet weather.
More seasoned hikers can also take the Bottomland Trail where they can get up-close and personal with nature. This 1.5 mile trail is a bit rugged but you'll go by some of the largest trees in the state.
Something else you may encounter on the trail are these huge Hickory nuts. These whoppers are the size of a baseball!
It's easy to become enamored with the peaceful scenery. There are benches located along the trail that are perfect for a relaxing moment.
It's easy to get swept away into the beautiful, lush forest. This winding trail looks like the setting for a magical fairy tale.
Sometimes there are even little woodland friends that come out to play on the Boardwalk Trail.
