The Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge is the oldest national wildlife refuge in Mississippi. It was established in 1936 and boasts nearly 13,000 acres to enjoy. Next time you’re looking for an outdoor adventure that the whole family can enjoy, consider making the trek out to this slice of natural paradise.
The Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge has a reputation for being one of the best bowhunting areas in the state, but the nature trails attract plenty of visitors looking to enjoy the scenery without the hunt.
The Holt Collier Boardwalk and Observation Tower is a 0.25-mile boardwalk trail that leads to an observation platform overlooking Lizard Lake.
The trail is family-friendly, including dogs.
Make sure you keep your dog on a leash though. There’s plenty of wildlife in this area, and you wouldn’t want your dog to cross paths with a venomous snake or an alligator.
It’s not uncommon to spot an alligator or two in the water.
The refuge is a great place to do a little wildlife watching. The area is very popular with songbirds, waterfowl, and migratory birds.
Alligators are more common in the warmer months. They like to sunbathe on the banks.
Another reminder to keep your pup on a leash! Nine times out of ten, alligators want nothing to do with you or your dog. But all it takes it one alligator to ruin the day.
Whether you want to introduce your kids to the beauty of Mississippi’s natural landscape or you just want to take a solo stroll, this place is perfect.
