Did you know that Mississippi’s BBQ Trail has been rated one of the country’s best? It’s true. The Magnolia State’s trail landed the #2 spot, coming in second only to Texas. And with over 200 restaurants, it’s also the largest BBQ trail in America. Those are some pretty big feats when it comes to meat! With so many mouthwatering eateries, the tasty trail can seem a bit overwhelming – and that’s where this list comes in. To make things a bit easier, we’ve come up with 9 stops everyone must make along Mississippi’s BBQ Trail. Take a look:
1. Bluesville BBQ
Please note, Bluesville BBQ is no longer in business.
Using recipes that took years to perfect, this "funky little BBQ joint" serves some of the best BBQ in the state. It’s cooked low and slow, resulting in tender, flavorful, mouthwatering meats. As soon as you set foot in the door, the aroma is sure to hit you – followed by an immense craving for some BBQ. Bluesville BBQ is located at 12102 Old Hwy 63, Lucedale, MS 39452.
2. Pig Out Inn
Considered some of the best BBQ in the state, Pig Out Inn specializes in slow smoked meats, which are cooked for a minimum of 16 hours on a custom built pit that never goes out. Prior to cooking, all of the meat is seasoned with a special rub and served with the restaurant’s signature sauce, which is said to be the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.
3. Goldie’s Trail BBQ
Open since 1960, this iconic Vicksburg restaurant serves up a tasty southern fare, including mouthwatering BBQ. 4. Leatha’s Bar-B-Que Inn
Proof that you can’t judge a book by its cover, this unassuming eatery is home to some of the best barbecue in the state. Opened since 1976, Leatha’s has been the recipient of a variety of awards as well as featured on several television shows and in numerous publications. Leatha’s is located at 6374 US Hwy 98, Hattiesburg, MS 39402.
5. Sonny’s Smokehouse
Between the small building and remote location, this Ackerman eatery is a bit difficult to find, but once you’ve tried the delicious ribs, tender brisket, and out-of-this world steak, you won’t regret making the trip. And according to customers, the mouthwatering food is only surpassed by the extremely generous portions and reasonable prices. Sonny’s is located at 8936 MS-15, Ackerman, MS 39735.
6. Abe’s Bar-B-Q
Situated at the crossroads where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to this devil, Abe’s famous location may be what draws customers in but it’s the award winning food and signature BBQ sauce that keep them coming back. Don’t live in the area? No problem; Abe’s ships its famous sauce all over the U.S. Abe’s is located at 616 N State St., Clarksdale, MS 38614.
7. Memphis Barbecue Co.

8. Bar-B-Q By Jim
With over 20 years of barbecuing experience, it’s easy to see why this spot is a local favorite. Bar-B-Q by Jim is located at 203 Commerce St., Tupelo, MS 38804.
9. Vine Brothers
This all-in-one gas station, restaurant, and meat market is located along Highway 24 in Centreville. It’s been around since the 80s and for good reason.
