There are plenty of bucket list places in Mississippi that should be visited at least once, and Plymouth Bluff is definitely one of them. Located in Columbus, the natural oasis offers the perfect escape from daily life, complete with a lake, pond, nature trails, a ton of history, and all the peace and quiet you could ask for. Basically heaven on earth, it’s hard to not fall in love with Plymouth Bluff, Mississippi. Take a look:
Spanning nearly 200 acres, Plymouth Bluff is tucked away in a secluded area high above the Tombigbee River Channel.
Situated in the woodlands of east central Mississippi, it provides the perfect setting for both recreation and education.
And that “perfect setting” we mentioned? It includes a river, pond, woodlands, cypress sloughs, nature trails, and more.
A great place for some one-of-a-kind exploring, Plymouth Bluff is a well-known Cretaceous fossil bed.
The area was actually once part of a vast inland sea and as a result, contains an abundance of fossilized remains, including mollusk shells and shark teeth.
Plymouth Bluff is also filled with plenty of deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, beavers, rabbits, squirrels, and armadillos. Wood ducks and Canadian geese also call the area home, and can often be found on the Tenn-Tom Waterway.
Just to make sure visitors don’t miss a thing, Plymouth Bluff includes four miles of nature trails.
The trails wind through a variety of natural terrains, including everything from a floodplain forest to mixed hardwoods.
Rated easy to moderate, most of the trails have been surfaced with asphalt, crushed limestone, or boardwalks.
Plenty of interpretive signs line the trails, identifying plants and providing information on the cultural history of the area.
One of the most popular trails is the River Trail – a loop trail that begins with a 64-step descent into a floodplain.
The Old Channel Trail is another top choice. Not only does it offer great views because it goes along the top of a bluff, but it also leads hikers to the base of the bluff, which is the perfect spot to look for fossils.
Plymouth Bluff also features a variety of facilities, including a conference room, outdoor pavilion, lakeside amphitheater, tennis and volleyball courts, and…
...20 guest rooms and cabins, so you can turn your visit into an extended getaway. Wouldn't you love to spend the night in a Plymouth Bluff cabin?
