For a grand adventure, you’ve got to visit one of the state’s grandest sites – the Simmons Arboretum! Among the best places to hike in Madison, Mississippi, it features acres of greenery, varying landscapes, wildlife, and rustic walking trails – complete with a few different types of bridges.
For a smaller city, Madison has a lot going for it. It’s consistently ranked one of the best cities in the state, and it is home to some great attractions, such as Simmons Arboretum.
Located off the beaten path, the arboretum is nestled at the very end of St. Augustine Drive, a quiet residential road near the Northbay Subdivision.
Since opening roughly 20 years ago, the 10-acre arboretum has undergone quite a transformation.
It started off as an unimproved sect of land, and today, it’s a “special green space” filled with wildlife as well as native trees and plants, which are identified with signage.
The topography within the arboretum varies and includes small hills, wetlands, and a “well sunken road,” which Natchez Trace officials suspect was part of the Old Trace.
Taking in the surrounding sights is best done from the arboretum’s nature trail, which extends just over one-half mile.
And don’t be concerned about tackling the varying terrain during your hike.
Several bridges, including a swinging bridge and boardwalks, ensure the trail is easy to traverse.
Both an educational hike and a beautiful adventure, the nature trail at Simmons Arboretum is sure to delight the young and old alike.
