Spring and summer are the best times to go fishing in Mississippi. Luckily, the Magnolia State isn’t lacking in freshwater lakes and rivers to drop a line in. If you’re on the hunt for a new honey hole, we’d recommend checking out Calling Panther Lake in Crystal Springs. Grab your tackle box, pole, and your fishing license, and let’s check it out:
Calling Panther Lake is a 404-acre man-made lake in Crystal Springs, Mississippi.
It’s one of the newest lakes in the state. Construction began in 2000 and it was finished in 2003. By 2006, the lake was stocked with fish and open to the public.
Calling Panther Lake Campground is the easiest way to access this lake. The ride to the campground is a bit bumpy, so take it slow.
There are 23 campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a bathhouse with showers and restrooms nearby.
The campground has a boat launch and plenty of parking.
Just check in with the front office to pay the launch fee and check in first.
The lake is stocked with bass, crappie, redear bream, bluefill bream, and channel catfish.
Summer is the best time to fish the lake for bass.
The lake has a ton of stumps and fallen timber, which can make navigating your boat tricky.
Honestly, I’d just use a trolling motor. The lake itself is one of the deepest lakes in the area (40+ feet) but watching for stumps can be a full-time job. Take it slow.
After you've hauled in your catch, take some time to explore the campground.
It's a beautiful area with plenty of wildlife. It's not uncommon to see a few deer wandering around in the tree line.
If you love fishing or hunting in Mississippi, you'll love the new camo collection from our friends at Wear Your Roots and Realtree. These cozy t-shirts and sweatshirts are the perfect complement to life outdoors – and we always love having a hoodie with us for those chilly mornings and evenings spent waiting for the fish to bite. Use code MISSISSIPPI10 for 10% off your order!
Keep in mind that the campground and lake don't have the best cell coverage. While it is a fabulous area to get away from it all, just know that you may not be able to send/receive any calls or text messages!
